Ubiquitous Computing

I learned that Ubiquitous computing is a vision of where computers are headed. The writer who speaks of ubiquitous computing as something we don't even think about its just a part of our everyday life. Some examples he gave were things like when we turn on our lights its operated by computer when walk in a room wireless communication would turn our lights on and if we touched an appliance it would turn on, etc... I don't think we are there yet but I do believe we are heading in that direction. Some peoples homes and environments are not anywhere near that type of environment. I can see this happening in some of the newer homes being built. An example would be the whole deal with energy efficient devices. Rochelle

oops talking about wrong assignments

I figured out that I was suppose to be talking about Technology Integration, presentation software and TPCK. Technology Integration is applying technology to the environment and to the learner to make the learning applicable to the 21st century. When we discussed presentation software,This was the first time I had ever heard anything negative about PowerPoint. I always thought of PowerPoint as a cool new invention and I felt like it was definately an improvement to overhead projectors. People can be creative with PowerPoints or they can be boring. I have seen a lot interesting and creative PowerPoint Presentations. TPCK research found that the learners that were immersed in learning technology by design learned problem solving skills. TPCK is a learn by doing strategy. Rochelle

mobile Learning November 8,2009

Prior to taking this course, Computer Applications in Education, I went to a training called Quality Tools and the presenters were trying to encourage teachers to embrace technology and to do things like use cellphones in the classroom for educational purposes. Therfore this is why I'm trying to keep an open mind and why I focused on the classroom management issue concerning cellphones. I personally work with students who do not talk or walk so this is not practical in my educational setting. I try to think about what and how this might affect me in my future because I also plan to do something with my Instructional Technology degree. Rochelle

Marc Prensky

After reading the Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants, I realized how true what the author was saying. I'm thankful to hear his perspective. We do try to put things in a box and package things the same way. I can totally relate to studying with no TV in the background and things of that nature because we were preached at growing up find a quiet place and study. I have always been amazed watching my daughters growing up how they can read abook while the tv is on or people are in the room talking or how they could listen to music, watch TV and do their homework. Now you see people driving and texting. I'm not that talented. Personally I think its dangerous but young people think nothing of it. Another thing that I and other adults of my age and older find it odd that a group teenagers/college age can be sitting in a group of friends texting other friends, talking on their cellphone and not really talking to the friends their with, how weird is that. they used to call their friends on the phone but more and more they are communicating by texting eachother, or commininicating through the computer on sites such as facebook and my space. It seems like communication breakdown to those of us who are digital immigrants. I fall into the category of enjoying and adopting the technology but I still fall into the digital immigrant category. project 3

I chose the Image Only project I made a video using photos posted on powerpoint and a program I downloaded to my PC. I did not know that you could save powerpoint slides individually as Jpg. I learned something new. That is a pretty cool feature and it made it easy to import into Windows movie maker. The Audacity program was pretty easy to work with and I actually watched a tutorial about it on you tube prior to downloading it to get somewhat familiarized with it. Where I ran into problems was matching the audio to the video since they were made in separate programs. I could adjust the photos in the timeline but not the audio. I had to shorten my photo time to match the audio. I'm thinking it might have been easier to do the audio in windows movie maker after I put the photos in the timeline. I also enjoyed reading about TPCK. I think it made me think about my teaching and how I integrate technology in the classroom. rochelle

project 2 Networking definitions

My definition was LAN. LAN means Local area network. I could not explain this to my peers until I read several websites about what a LAN is. I actually use LAN in my own home and at work. Prior to my reading definitions and example I could not explain it to my peers, coworkers and family members. This was a good experience. I use LAN to access the internet and IPTV in my home. I did not know that people used it for gaming and home theatre. We use LAN to share a network printer at work. Rochelle

assignment 1 administrative tasks

Well the first assignment I had some glitches with posting stuff to the web server and having the appropriate Java tools to put images in my postings. I hope to work out the kinks soon. I really enjoyeed reading the introductions of my classmates and viewing the pictures. I was envious at the same time that their pictures showed up in their posting and I was unable to post mine. I had to use file attachments for my postings. Its just not the same. Rochelle Sept. 3, 2009
